In 2007 we began restoring the roofs on St John the Baptist Church at Foxham village in Wiltshire. In May 2021, we completed of the latest phase of work on this church. It has now been fully re-roofed by West Country Tiling Company.

History

Built in 1878-81, this Grade II* listed church was designed in the Gothic revival style by architect William Butterfield. The main roofs are stone slate, the tower is oak shakes and the walls are rubble with ashlar.

The Foxham church project

This project, spanning over 14 years, was carried out in conjunction with Andrew Townsend Architects.

In the initial phase of this project, our team of experienced roofers erected a full canopy scaffold, stripped and re-roofed all of the Cotswold stone slate roofs using the salvaged slates on riven oak laths.

The second, and final phase, was the recovering of the Tower. We erected scaffold, stripped the old oak shakes and replaced them with new ones.

A shake, not to be mistaken with a shingle, is a hand-split piece of wood made using a mallet and froe to create a tapered wedge. We supplied replacement hand-cleaved shakes made from oak.

The team repaired the louvers, which are horizontal angled slats designed to admit light and air, we also decorated the weathervane, including gilding the cockerel.

It was a pleasure to work on this roof for a second time and we’re delighted to have completely re-roofed this lovely church at Foxham.
