Nestled in the heart of the Cotswolds, the picturesque village of Castle Combe is often hailed as one of the prettiest villages in England. Its honey-coloured stone cottages transport visitors to a bygone era. Among its many historical treasures, St Andrew’s Church stands as a testament to the rich heritage of this charming village.

The origins of St Andrew’s Church date back to the 13th century, although much of the structure visible today was added in the 15th century. Its iconic 70-foot tower, constructed around 1434, was funded by the local cloth trade, which flourished in the medieval period.

Castle Combe itself is a living postcard. The village’s history dates back to Roman times, with the name derived from the now-vanished Norman castle that once overlooked the valley. Today, its well-preserved architecture and tranquil atmosphere attract visitors from around the globe.

When exploring St Andrew’s Church, it is impossible not to marvel at the enduring craftsmanship that defines this village. It is a place where heritage roofing, like the stone slates on this church, plays an essential role in preserving its unique character.

Heritage Roofing in the Cotswolds

At West Country Tiling, we take pride in helping maintain the historic charm of churches such as St Andrew’s in Castle Combe. With over 35 years of experience in traditional roofing, we understand the importance of preserving churches for future generations.

In 2016, we carried out phase one of the roof restoration on St Andrew’s Church. This entailed removing all of the stone slates from the north North elevation of the Nave roof and the North Aisle. We recycled as much of the stone slate as possible, and replaced any that had perished. Over time, the new and old slate will blend together seamlessly.

In 2025, we will be working on the south side of St Andrew’s church Nave roof and the South Aisle. This work is funded in part by grants, and the remainder from the many financial donations made by the tourists that visit the picture-perfect Castle Combe every year.
