We are currently working on The Bay Tree Hotel’s beautiful stone slate roof. The hotel is a Grade II listed building dating from the 16th century. Built using the typical Cotswold buff coloured stone, draped in Wisteria and roofed using the traditional honey coloured stone slates. The village of Burford, near Oxford, is often referred to as The Gateway to the Cotswold. Making the hotel a perfect place to stay when visiting Blenheim Palace or Sudeley Castle.
Stone Slate Roof
To reroof the staff house at The Bay Tree Hotel, we first needed to strip the existing roof of the perished stone slate and install new insulation, using Rockwool Acoustic Ceiling Insulation, before replacing the stone slate roof using high-quality slates from the Cotswold Stone Quarries.
Cotswold stone roof tiles
Cotswold stone roof tiles are made from natural limestone found in the Cotswold region. These traditional stone tiles, or slates, have been used for centuries in heritage and period properties because they possess historic charm and are notoriously durable.
Cotswold stone roof tiles naturally weather over time, developing a delightful patina, which only enhances their appearance. The exposure to rain, wind and sun over time creates a soft, weathered look, often with subtle colour changes. The slates naturally darken or develop shades of mossy green and soft greys, adding character and blending with their environment.
As the slates weather, their texture evolves. Small imperfections and slight surface erosion give them a more rustic and authentic appearance, which is part of the timeless beauty that people appreciate in traditional stone slate roofs.Even as they age, Cotswold stone slates remain highly durable. They are resistant to frost and water absorption making them ideal for our English weather. Cotswold stone roof tiles have been used in the construction of many historic and listed buildings and their ageing process adds to the charm of the hotels and homes that they adorn.
