Jo Rydon, one of our directors, has completed Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training to provide compassionate support to any team member struggling with their mental health. Whether an employee is dealing with financial pressures, relationship challenges, or the effects of physical illness, Jo is equipped to offer guidance and ensure they can access the right resources. Through the MHFA app, Jo has access to expert advice and a wide range of tools, including the Hub of Hope, a comprehensive mental health support database from Chasing the Stigma. The Hub of Hope connects individuals to local and national support services, providing vital information and access to organisations that can help, including counselling and crisis support. This ensures our team always has a pathway to the help they need.

The construction industry’s mental health crisis

The UK construction industry faces significant challenges related to mental health. Workers in this sector are nearly three times more likely to die by suicide compared to those in other industries, with rates as high as 29 suicides per 100,000 workers. This disparity may be influenced by factors such as long working hours and the stigma surrounding mental health discussions.

Research shows that over half of work-related illnesses are linked to poor mental health, including stress, anxiety and depression. This highlights the urgent need for workplace strategies to address these issues.

MHFA Trained Staff – Jo is trained by MHFA England to provide initial support to employees experiencing mental health difficulties. Jo is equipped to listen, offer guidance and direct employees to professional counselling services when needed.

Open Conversations – we are committed to fostering a workplace culture where discussing mental health is encouraged, not stigmatised. Creating an open dialogue is essential in an industry where workers often feel isolated.

Access to Resources – through initiatives like MHFA, our employees can learn about external support systems such as helplines, counselling and training programs tailored to the construction sector.
