The National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) is committed to reducing the environmental impact of roofing within construction. As members of the NFRC Competent Roofer Scheme, we are also committed to sustainability and reducing the environmental impact of our roofing projects.

We are aware of the current performance gap, this is the predicted energy performance of a building at design stage, and its actual performance after completion. As NFRC competent roofers, we want to help reduce this gap.

Recent studies have suggested that in-use energy consumption of a building can be 5 to 10 times higher than compliance calculations carried out during the design stage. Some of the factors contributing to this include:

There are discrepancies between the design specification and quality of the work as-built.
There is poor feedback from the construction site about what is, and what is not buildable.
Site practices that may have been acceptable 20+ years ago, no longer meet the required standards of today’s building regulations and energy certification.

Choose energy-efficient roofing materials that are from sustainable sources.
Proper installation of your chosen roof covering is essential for maximising its energy-saving potential.
Ensure that your roof has adequate insulation to prevent heat transfer between your home and the outside.
Make sure that your roofing tiles are well laid, to prevent any water leaks, which could damage the insulation.
Proper ventilation to reduce heat build-up in your home.
Make sure your roof is properly sealed and weather-stripped to prevent air leaks.
Choose energy-efficient window and/or skylight options with high-quality seals and coatings to minimize heat transfer.
If feasible, consider installing solar panels on your roof to generate clean, renewable energy.
