We are delighted to announce the successful completion of the re-roofing of the historic Stable Block at Bisham Abbey with plain clay roof tiles. As local roofing specialists in the Buckinghamshire area, we undertook this project in collaboration with Oxley Conservation. The reroof was meticulously planned and executed to preserve the historic character of this Grade I listed manor house. This restoration focused on the old stable block, ensuring that use of modern hand-made plain clay roof tiles harmonised with the building’s historical significance.

Work carried out

To protect the structure during this restoration, a full temporary roof scaffold was installed. This provided a controlled environment for our roofers, while preventing exposure to any adverse weather conditions.

The existing plain clay roof tiles were carefully removed to assess and address underlying timber issues. Extensive repairs were conducted to ensure the roof remains structurally sound for many years to come. This process was crucial in maintaining the authenticity of the structure while reinforcing its strength.

Specialist stonemasons, Kerr Stone Services, reinforced the gable walls by tying the two skins together and securing them to the roof structure. This step was vital in preventing potential future movements and ensuring long-term stability. By integrating traditional stonemasonry techniques with modern conservation methods, we maintained the historical authenticity of the building.

To enhance thermal performance while maintaining breathability, Steicoflex wood fibre insulation was installed. This eco-friendly material offers excellent insulation properties and contributes to a healthier indoor environment. The use of Steicoflex aligns with sustainable conservation practices, ensuring that the building remains comfortable while being energy-efficient.

Prioritising natural ventilation and accommodating local wildlife, the roof was battened and tiled without the use of felt. This approach allows for improved airflow while creating a bat-friendly environment, an essential consideration in heritage restoration projects. The careful selection of materials and techniques ensures that the structure remains in harmony with its surroundings.

A blend of four distinct clay tile colours from Tudor Roof Tiles was selected to replicate the roof’s original appearance. The craftsmanship and attention to detail in laying the plain clay roof tiles contributed to the overall authenticity of the restoration.

The flat roof sections were refurbished with sand-cast lead, ensuring durability and aligning with traditional roofing practices. Leadwork has been a longstanding feature in historic roofing, offering both longevity and continuity with the rest of the structure. As local roofing specialists in the South West of England, we have over 35 years of experience in leadwork.
