We recently completed the re-roof of the Chancel of the Church of the Holy Cross in Babcary, Somerset using stone roof tiles. At West Country Tiling, church roofs are one of our specialities.

The stone church building is Grade II* listed and dates from the 14th century. There is a three-stage tower, supported by corner buttresses, that houses six bells. The church consists of a three-bay nave with a north aisle and a two-bay chancel. It was the roof on the chancel that we worked on using ham stone slate. These stone roof tiles are a beautiful warm honey colour when cleaned through the dressing process. In time they will weather, until they match the remainder of the existing roof.

Stone Roof Tiles

The chancel roof of the church required stripping and re-roofing using stone roof tiles. We also added 60mm Steico special dry insulation. As with most historic church roofs, there was no insulation and the addition of this meant that we needed to raise the roof level.

As a result, there was no longer any space for the weathering at the abutment with the parapet wall. Therefore, we were required to add lead secret gutters. What this means is guttering that is hidden underneath the stone roof tiles. At the abutment with the nave, we used lead soakers and a 2-layer lime fillet to retain the original appearance. It is attention to details such as these which make the roofing teams at West Country Tiling specialists in church roofs.
