Third Generation of Pitts at West Country Tiling

We are thrilled to announce that as of January 2025, the third generation of Pitts will be joining West Country Tiling. Toby Pitt’s daughter, Chelsea, is stepping into the family business as a Trainee Manager. This marks a new chapter in our history and underscores our commitment to passing on the expertise and values that have defined our company for decades.

A legacy of excellence

The story of West Country Tiling began in the 1960s with Derek Pitt. His career started at Marley; a renowned supplier of concrete roof tiles established by Owen Aisher in 1924. In those days, builders sourced their materials and roofers from regional Marley representatives. During the housing boom that followed World War II, Marley had a manager in every depot – and Derek was one of them.

In 1969, when Owen Aisher retired, Derek and his fellow managers made a bold move. In a remarkable show of unity, they left Marley, bringing their roofing teams with them to establish independent businesses. This decision led to the founding of West Country Tiling, and initially the business focused on new builds, partnering with local builders and developers in Somerset.

A new direction

In 1990, after a car accident forced Derek to retire, his son Toby took the helm. Determined to honour his father’s legacy while carving a new path, Toby transitioned West Country Tiling into a specialist roofing company with a focus on historically significant properties. Under his leadership, the company has worked on some of the South West’s most iconic sites, including Blenheim Palace, Corfe Castle, Hampton Court Castle, numerous National Trust and Heritage England properties, as well as private residences, manor houses, abbeys, churches and listed buildings.
